A parade is an awesome way to fight for endangered species!
Katrina Brees is a parade-maker. With a list of skills including costume-making, choreographing, and performing, this former New Orleans Queen of Carnival packs the fun into each and every parade she helps bring to life. It’s this same passion for life that drove her to her latest endeavor and to become our newest Awesome Without Borders grantee: Kolossos Bike Zoo.
Kolossos is a collection of artists (the Krewe!) devoted to showcasing eco-friendly public art and performance to raise awareness for environmental and animal endangerment. They create papier-mâché animal sculpture bikes! The organization has begun exclusively creating threatened and exploited species bikes. Recent additions include a honey bee and panda to help raise awareness for these threatened or close to being endangered animals. In the future, they would like to build bikes reflecting the rhino, tiger and shark.Unfortunately, there are way too many animals to choose from. With these bikes, the Kolossos team are able to spread their message to millions of viewers during parades, and on shows like America’s Got Talent.
With their Awesome Without Borders grant, Kolossos Bike Zoo will purchase more used bikes, papier-mâché, and other building materials for even more amazing bikes. To keep up with Katrina and the Krewe of Kolossos, you can check out their website, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook!
Kan’t wait to see what krazy awesome project this krew komes up with next!
