50X50: RECOVERING THE CLASSICS (Durham)

October 19, 2015

Every book deserves a great cover!

In 2013, Recovering the Classics embarked on a pretty spectacular mission: to recreate and reimagine the covers of classic books. It was a wild success, and this past spring, they took it one step further and announced the 50×50 initiative, a partnership with the New York Public Library, the White House and the Digital Public Library of America to showcase 50 of these covers in schools and libraries across all 50 states, and turn these books into special edition e-books. People are encouraged to create and host their own events around the covers, and celebrate literacy and community worldwide. So… where do we come in?

iDrive Change, LLC is a community development, engagement and design company in Durham, NC that works collaboratively with citizens, stakeholders and funders to creatively solve urban challenges. On October 28, the team wants to host an event in Durham, NC that will launch the 50×50 initiative and serve as the platform to attract local philanthropists to fund a reading app. The goal? To upload these covers onto an app for kids in Durham Public Schools and Durham Housing Authority to access free digital copies of these books. They will be using our AWB grant for the launch event supplies and marketing!

You can find iDrive Change on Facebook here, and on the web here. If you’re interested in hosting your own 50×50 event, visit their website at 50×50.us to learn more.
