For the LGBTQ asylum seekers in the USA who have no idea how to live as themselves because they would have been killed for doing so in their home country.
It’s illegal in over 70 countries to be homosexual, and ten countries still execute people just for their same-sex orientation. That’s why they seek political asylum in the USA.
We are not so naïve as to imagine that people who escaped persecution for their gender or sexual identities won’t have any problems here in the home of the brave and the land of the free. That’s why the AsylumDirectory was created: to let them know where to find compassionate support.
Co-founded in 2014 by a lesbian and a gay asylum seeker, AsylumConnect finds safe, verified resources and helps newcomers feel a sense of community. The AsylumDirectory is the first-ever online database of resources for LGBTQ asylum seekers. It’s so awesome that even immigration attorneys and nonprofits use it to help their clients get settled and feel at home.
This Awesome Without Borders grant will pay some of the bills that keep the directory online.
