Grant #225

Dinner for Refugees

January 3, 2017

Human dignity and a hot meal for 6,000 refugees. This organization is stepping up to the plate (literally).

It’s here. 2017 that is. Which would you rather do: Reflect on the past 12 months or look ahead to 2017? Tough choice, we know. But for the millions of refugees who have survived 2016 and the year’s biggest humanitarian crisis, looking forward offers hope. Kind of casts a shadow over the holiday season and makes your resolution to do less double screening inconsequential, doesn’t it? Luckily, our latest grantee, No Borders Kitchen, is a glimmer of light and sparkle poking through the dark cloak of reality we just laid on you.

Among the saddening situation and the dire conditions, No Borders Kitchen has stepped up to the plate (literally). The organization brings together a team of volunteers to cook and serve hot meals twice a day to the refugees on the Greek island of Lesvos — a major place of transit for many refugees. On average they serve around 600 people per day, but they wanted to go bigger this holiday season and serve 10x more individuals (this video gives you a sneak peek). Of course, Awesome Without Borders wanted to help. This week’s grant will go towards purchasing ingredients for the meal. Of course, it’s more than just a hot meal that we’re supporting — it’s the value of upholding dignity and respect for all people (with or without papers). Let’s aim to do more of that in 2017.
