Grant #226

“No Somos Invisibles” Radio

January 9, 2017

This Peruvian radio program turns up the volume on equality.

Radio is seeing a huge revival in the U.S. with popular podcasts like Serial, 2 Dope Queens, and Call Your Girlfriend. There are an endless plethora of subjects being discussed that intrigue, impassion, or infuriate — and help you get through your day. The hosts’ voices are by your side (or rather, in your ears) when you’re driving to your next destination, getting ready in the morning, or sifting through emails at work.

But around the world, where Facebook and Google aren’t readily available, the medium plays a crucial role in providing reliable information and giving women a platform to tell their stories and discuss sensitive topics. Turning up the volume on the opinions and voices of women and girls? We’re in. So is our latest grantee, No Somos Invisibles, or “We are Not Invisible,” a weekly radio program in Peru. The program focuses on the rights of child and adult domestic workers, tackling a good mix of issues including the nitty gritty of labor rights, child domestic work, and sexual harassment in the workplace. While they are building a strong listenership, they are also sparking conversations about gender equality and just, dignified work for all.

Awesome Without Borders will support the production of two community radio programs in 2017. Can’t wait to listen? Their latest radio programs are online here and you can follow them on Facebook (both in Spanish).
