There’s nothing we love more than a good improv troupe, especially when it’s designed to give kids a voice and real world coping skillz.
Did you know that one of the most stressful conditions for any human is the feeling that they’re not in control of their lives? Maybe you remember being a kid when so much of your life was decided by other people. It’s worse if you’re poor, because money allows a certain amount of control over circumstances, like buying food on the regular and paying rent.
Believe it or not, that can affect a person’s cognitive skills.
How to intervene?
Ta da! Enter Equippo, an improv program for kids and teens in Jalisco, Mexico.
We know from our own Funny Girls™ program that fun improv exercises help young people learn how to use creativity, communication, focus and critical thinking. Most importantly, improv frees a kid to create a voice of their own – no adult is telling them what to say or how to express themselves.
Every kid gets a chance to explore and create the best version of themselves in a safe, welcoming, non-judgmental space. The hope is that the young people will feel excited about getting good enough to perform in public, so they can show off their skills and prove that anyone from anywhere can rise to shine.
Our Awesome Without Borders grant will help with a big tent for outdoor practice, props, and plenty of water and snacks. Follow along with this awesomeness on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/somosparvada/
