Grant #158

Her Story

September 14, 2015

A new media series created BY trans and queer women FOR trans and queer women.

From E!’s I Am Cait to Amazon’s Transparent to Netflix’s Orange is the New Black, we’re starting to (finally) see an awesome shift in the media and entertainment industry: transgender representation! We are thrilled to support, and bring your attention to, a new media series due out this fall called Her Story, which looks inside the dating lives of trans and queer women as they navigate the intersections of desire and identity. From the looks of the trailer, we think this series has huge potential to help shift cultural perceptions and break taboos of women in the trans and queer communities.

Her Story stars transgender writer and actor Jen Richards, accomplished trans entrepreneur and actor Angelica Ross, and writer/actor Laura Zak, star of the hit web series #Hashtag. The plot centers around two trans women in Los Angeles who have given up on love, when suddenly chance encounters give them hope. Violet (Richards) is drawn to Allie (Zak), a reporter who approaches her for an interview, while career-driven Paige (Ross) meets James (Christian Ochoa), the first man she’s considered opening up to in years. Richards and Zak are co-writers on the series, with award-winning filmmaker Sydney Freeland (Drunktown’s Finest) directing, and playwright and activist Eve Ensler (V-Day, The Vagina Monologues) and Katherine Fisher (Speed of Joy Production) executive producing.

Our AWB grant will help the team finish post-production, which involves editing, sound, music, color correction, and publicity. Their dream is to turn this into a full series that helps to make visible the lives of women who too often are made invisible. Interesting in supporting? Click here. Want to go behind the scenes?
