A Short Film Celebrates Difference with the Help of Some Surreal Friends
The owl stands just a few inches tall, but this crochet creation makes a hoot of an impression. The adorable, wandering owl is the star of Agata Nawrot’s new series of short, stop-motion animated films. (Agata, an artist and master engineer landscape architect, first featured her in the game Odgłos. And her sister in fact created her.) Now Agata wants to expand that universe through simple stories that can appeal to a wider audience.
In the films, her owl will visit a surreal world, full of shapeshifting furniture and puppet creatures with distinct personalities. “I find that bringing out the soul in everyday objects makes people more empathetic and connected to the life around them,” Agata explains. She hopes the heartwarming project makes her fellow “sensitive misfits” feel understood, seen, and supported. “The movies,” she adds, “will teach about acceptance of diversity, and about helping others, especially nature and animals.”
Our grant will help Agata purchase props for her sets and materials to build additional scenes, plus recording equipment and lights. As a person who realized she was neurodivergent later in life, Agata knows what it’s like to feel unwelcome in a strange world. In the universe she’s creating, difference is championed. We can’t wait to experience it for ourselves.
