Werk It! A Fashion Design Program Operating in Nigeria
Too often, dream careers are for the privileged. If you have the time and resources, you can afford to fantasize about a profession that calls to you. If you don’t, you usually have to take the job you can get. But the staff at the Hope Career Development Center doesn’t think anyone should have to settle. That’s why it operates free skill acquisition and after-school training programs in trades like hairdressing, carpentry, catering, electrical work, and fashion design. The center is based in Awe in Oyo State, Nigeria, and it was founded by Christina Adeshakin. It now has 175 trainees, 14 staff members, and over 600 applicants waiting for a chance to enroll.
Hope Career Development Center targets vulnerable young people, with the goal of offering services for at least six months or up to two years. It will soon graduate another class of 90 trainees. Our grant will help the center purchase classroom supplies for its fashion design department. Because fostering creativity and ambition in youth around the world never goes out of style.
